Ignition Interlock Device Information
An ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer installed in an individual’s vehicle which requires the driver to blow into it before starting the vehicle and while the vehicle is in drive mode.
This device is usually located near the driver’s seat and is connected directly to the vehicle’s ignition system. This device is set to confirm that the driver of the vehicle has zero percent alcohol concentration in their breath.
The interlock is required to be installed in vehicles of individuals who have been convicted of a DUI charge.
How do I install the ignition interlock?

You will need to decide on a location and contact the agency to make an appointment to have the ignition interlock installed.
You want to choose an agency near your home or place of work because the agency will need to do periodic maintenance to the device.
The maintenance reports will need to be submitted to the Court that ordered the installation of the ignition interlock.

This may be decided by the Court that ordered the ignition interlock be installed and by the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD).
Usually the interlock will need to be installed for a period of twelve (12) months.
MVD can order the ignition interlock be installed for an additional period of time based upon the conviction as well.
You will need to contact your local MVD to confirm the period the ignition interlock will be installed.
In the event that you are convicted of a first time, regular offense DUI, you may be eligible for an early release from the interlock requirement after 6 months, presuming you have no other violations.
