Ignition Interlock Device Information
Overview
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer installed in a vehicle that requires the driver to blow into it before starting the engine and periodically while driving. The device ensures that the driver has a zero percent alcohol concentration before the vehicle can be operated.
The IID is typically installed near the driver’s seat and is directly connected to the vehicle’s ignition system. This device is mandatory for individuals convicted of a DUI as ordered by the court or the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD).
How to Install an Ignition Interlock Device
To install an IID, you must contact a state-certified agency. Certified agency locations are available throughout the state, and you will need to:
Select a location convenient to your home or workplace.
Contact the agency to schedule an installation appointment.
Keep in mind that regular maintenance and calibration of the device are required.
Ongoing Maintenance & Compliance
Periodic maintenance and calibration must be performed by the certified agency. Maintenance reports must be submitted to the Court or MVD as required by law. Choosing a nearby agency is recommended for ease of access to required servicing.
Choosing a Certified IID Provider
When selecting an IID provider, consider the following factors:
Reputation – Look for an agency with positive reviews and a solid track record.
Location – Choose a provider conveniently located for installation and maintenance.
Technology – Ensure the device is reliable and meets state compliance standards.
Pricing – Costs vary by provider; compare pricing and service packages.
Duration of Ignition Interlock Requirement
The length of time you must have an IID installed depends on your conviction and your compliance record under A.R.S. § 28-1461.
Standard Requirement: For a first-offense, non-extreme DUI, the IID is typically required for 12 months.
Extreme/Super Extreme DUI: Convictions involving a BAC of .15 or higher generally still require 12 months, though some cases may extend further depending on prior history.
Aggravated DUI: Convictions for aggravated DUI commonly require 24 months of IID installation.
Violation Extensions: Tampering, circumventing the device, or failing breath tests can trigger an automatic 6-month extension of your requirement, per ADOT/MVD.
Early Removal Eligibility: Early removal after 6 months is generally only available for first-time, non-extreme DUI convictions with no violations — it’s typically not available for extreme, super extreme, or aggravated DUI cases.
Your IID clock doesn’t start until both your suspension period has ended and MVD has received your conviction notice, whichever happens later. To confirm the exact duration of your IID requirement, contact your local MVD or consult with your legal counsel.
